Olga Rakitova (Burdakova) "Odyssey", 9-sided Persian casket, 2002, 18x13x17, 9.5art., 3500 US
After a Greek epic poem by Homer. You could better understand the scenes of that unusual for Palekh art piece, if you read the actual poem. One possible such link, as was advised by an American collector, would be: http://www.uoregon.edu/~joelja/odyssey.html . Beautiful example of creativity, imagination and the open-minded talent of Olga Rakitova. She seems to be one of the 5 top young artists (younger than 30 years old) in Palekh nowadays and the youngest art teacher in Palekh Art school at the same time. That could be one of the proves why this piece is so well technically done, besides it's amazing creative composition. All the borders, human figures and faces details are very accurate and filigree, just beyond the words. This theme could be found in the collection of the Palekh State Museum of Art nearly once (V.Kotov. 'The State Museum of Palekh Art", Isobrazitelnoye Iskusstvo publishers, Moscow, 1975. "Odyssey", 1936, casket, by P.Parilov (1880-1956), catalogue N86), but proceeding the ideas and iconic techniques of the founders she shown on her masterpiece not just a scene from Odyssey, but nearly a whole ancient epic world full of dangerous adventures and brave hero-deeds. |
